Welcome To Purbrook Horticultural Society Store
STORE NEWS - OCTOBER 2009
There is still a wide selection of Spring bulbs available at the
Store, all at a good discount off the normal retail price. The
very popular, extra large, Amaryllis bulbs are also in
stock now. These are the largest bulbs available and should all
produce at least two stems of magnificent flowers. Because they
can become top heavy it is advisable to plant them in a heavy
earthenware or clay pot. There are often some suitable pots on
the Plant Stall at the Store.
Winter onions are available for planting now. Varieties are
‘Radar’ (standard golden) and ‘Electric Red’ (red). Winter
Broad Beans, ‘Aqua Claudia’ should be available very
soon.
We also have a plentiful supply of
woodchips for mulching.
Christmas Potatoes
These are seed potatoes held back in cold
store so that they will produce a crop of ‘new potatoes’ in time
for Christmas, or before. The variety this year will be the
popular salad potato
CHARLOTTE. Delivery should be in July and they should be
planted immediately (no chitting needed). They can be planted in
pots or in the ground but need to be protected from any early
frosts, they also need to be kept moist. Growth is very rapid
and they should be ready for harvesting from November.
Sodium Chlorate
This is about to be taken off the market. We only have a few
tubs left.
Shamrock Growbags
We have sold out of these and they are now difficult to obtain,
but we have plenty of ‘Gromoor’ ones in stock.
